The EU Commission has preliminarily concluded that Sweden has satisfactorily completed the necessary milestones and targets to obtain €1.6bn as its first instalment under the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). Sweden submitted a payment request at the end of 2024, aiming to support 14 reforms (including a further decarbonisation of its transport sector) and 13 investments (towards goals including CO2 emission reduction) designed to benefit Swedish citizens and businesses. Among the most relevant measures are Sweden’s “Climate Leap” initiative to reduce emissions by an additional 540 kt/year, which includes the installation of public electric vehicle charging stations.
The Commission has sent its preliminary assessment to the Economic and Financial Committee (EFC), which has four weeks to deliver its opinion which will have to be followed by a payment decision by the Commission.
