The European Commission has approved, under EU State aid rules, a Czech support measure for the construction and operation of a new 1.2 GW nuclear power plant in Dukovany, Czechia. In March 2022, Czechia notified the EU Commission of its plan to build and operate a new nuclear power plant in Dukovany. The nuclear power plant is expected to be commissioned in 2036 for trial operations, while commercial operations are planned for 2038. The plant will have an operating lifetime of 60 years and is planned to be decommissioned in 2096. Dukovany is already the site of an existing nuclear power plant.
In addition, the Czech nuclear electric power generation company ČEZ Group and its Elektrárna Dukovany II subsidiary have received binding bids from Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) and France’s EDF for the construction of four units for the new Dukovany nuclear power plant. EDF is proposing to build EPR-1200 reactors, while KHNP plans to install APR-1000 reactors. The contracts are expected to be finalised during the course of 2024 and ready for signing by the end of March 2025.
Czechia aims to rise the share of nuclear power from 35% in 2013 to between 46% to 58% by 2040 (37% in 2022). The country gets electricity from the four VVER-440 units at Dukovany, which began operating between 1985 and 1987, and the two VVER-1000 units in operation at Temelín, which came into operation in 2000 and 2002.
