EU clears €22m support to efficient transport, energy infrastructure

EU countries have approved the European Commission's proposal to invest €22m to support seven actions that will help develop sustainable and efficient transport and energy infrastructure. The projects will receive funding from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF)'s Synergy call.

The seven actions include an assessment of options for building a pipeline that would carry LNG from Italy to Malta for use as a marine fuel (€0.6m funding), the development of a cross-border electricity smart grid increasing the energy efficiency of the Croatian railway system (SINCRO.GRID project receiving €1m), and the creation of electricity storage systems strategically located on key transport corridors between Austria and Germany (Rhine-Danube Corridor project receiving €5.2m).

The East-Med Core Network Corridor gas pipeline project in Cyprus should get €4.5m, while the Go4Synergy in LNG project (sea link between a small scale LNG-to-container transhipment facility in Zeebrugge in Belgium and a ship bunkering facility in Gothenburg in Sweden) will receive €2.6m. A power interconnection project between the Netherlands and Denmark will receive €8.95m, while the construction of a small-scale LNG reloading terminal in the port of Gdańsk and of LNG bunkering vessels (Poland) will receive €1m.
