EU approves a €9.4bn renewable energy support scheme (Poland)

The European Commission (EC) has approved a PLN40bn (€9.4bn) Polish support scheme for renewable energy development. The scheme grants a State support to producers of electricity from renewable sources and potential beneficiaries will be selected under the framework of competitive auctions. The first two tenders took place respectively in December 2016 and June 2017, while additional auctions are expected to be organized until June 2021.

The support scheme comprises feed-in-tariffs for small installations with a capacity of up to 500 kW and a premium on top of the market power price for installations with a capacity of more than 500 kW. Beneficiaries will receive the premium as compensation for costs that cannot be recovered from selling electricity in the market. However, they will receive the premium only if the market power price is below the bidding price submitted in the auction
