The European Commission has approved, under EU State aid rules, an aid package to support the construction and operation of Poland’s first nuclear power plant (European Commission statement, 10/12/2025).
- The nuclear plant, with a power generation capacity of up to 3.7 GW, is expected to begin operation in the second half of the 2030s.
- The project includes three new nuclear reactors, each with a capacity of 1,250 MW.
- In September 2024, Poland notified the Commission of its plan to support Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ), a fully State-owned company, in building and operating a new nuclear facility in Lubiatowo-Kopalino.
- Total investment is estimated at PLN 178bn (€42bn)
Poland plans to grant direct price support through a two-way contract for difference (CfD), ensuring stable revenues for 40 years. The beneficiary will also receive an equity injection covering around 30% of project costs, as well as State guarantees covering 100% of the debt taken on by PEJ to finance the project.
Poland aims to reach 7.7 GW of operational nuclear capacity by 2040, representing roughly 19% of the country’s power mix by that time (Enerdata Global Energy Research).
