According to data submitted by the EU’s Member States, EU ETS emissions declined by 5% in 2024 and are now around 50% below 2005 levels and on track to achieve the 2030 target of -62%. The power sector saw the largest emission reduction by 12% below 2023 levels, thanks to an increase of renewable energy production (8%) and nuclear (5%), coupled with a reduction in gas- and coal-fired energy production (by 8% and 15%, respectively).
Energy intensive industry kept stable emissions (5% drop in the cement sector offset by a 7% rise in the fertiliser sector), while aviation emissions covered by the EU ETS rose compared to 2023 by around 15%, in part due to the broadening of geographical coverage. Maritime emissions are being covered for the first time since 2024 and reports are still being collected from EU Members, hence no trend of emissions can be reported for the moment.
