Ethiopia to commission 254 MW hydropower project in August 2019

The Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy of Ethiopia expects the 254 MW Genale Dawa hydropower project to be connected to the national power grid and to start generating power in August 2019. The project is currently being built by China Gezhouba Group in southeastern Ethiopia and it should generate over 1.6 TWh/year.

Other renewable power projects are scheduled to be commissioned soon in Ethiopia, including the 125 MW Aisha wind power project developed by Dongfang Electric in the Somali State and expected in January 2020. The 6,450 MW Grand Ethiopian Renascence Dam (GERD) will start generation in 2021. In addition, six solar power projects totalling 800 MW are in the bidding process, while independent power producers Corbetti Geothermal and Tulu Moye Geothermal have signed power purchasing agreements (PPAs) with EEP to develop 1 GW of geothermal power plants in the Oromia Regional State West Arsi Zone.
