The 7.2 mcm/d (2.6 bcm/year) Balticconnector gas pipeline interconnecting Inkoo (Finland) to Paldiski (Estonia) has been commissioned, with the delivery of gas from the Inčukalns facility in Latvia to Estonia and to Finland. It has enabled the launch of a common gas market between Estonia, Latvia and Finland on 1 January 2020, with an annual volume of around 40 TWh. Gas transmission system operators (TSOs) - namely Estonia's Elering, Latvia's Conexus Baltic Grid and Gasgrid Finland - will continue further development of the regional gas market.
The €250m Balticconnector offshore gas pipeline, which entered construction phase in July 2018, aims at creating an alternative supply route for the Finnish market and at connecting the country to the rest of the European Union. It will help Finland and Estonia diversify their gas imports sources (dominated by Russia).
