Estonia, Finland, Latvia and Lithuania move ahead with regional gas market

The governments of Estonia, Finland, Latvia and Lithuania, along with their energy regulators and gas transmission system operators (TSOs) have approved a roadmap on regional gas market integration, on order to improve the security of supply in the region, market liquidity, integration and competition, and to ensure affordable gas prices and high quality service for all consumers in these countries.

In December 2015, the governments of Baltic States endorsed the Regional Gas Market Development Action Plan and invited Finland to take part in this process. The Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan (BEMIP) Action Plan aims to prepare a regional gas market model in the Baltic States and an interconnected gas market with Finland, while the Regional Gas Market Coordination Group (RGMCG) was set up to facilitate the development of the functioning regional gas market in the East Baltic region.

Several cross-border gas projects have been, such as the the Balticconnector gas pipeline between Estonia and Finland and the Gas Interconnection Poland–Lithuania (GIPL).
