The Norwegian renewable company Deep Wind Offshore (DWO) has won an auction for the development of an up to 1,560 MW offshore wind project in the Saare 2.1 area off Estonia. The 164 km2 area was awarded to DWO by Estonia’s Consumer Protection and Technical Regulation Authority (CPTRA). The other two companies that participated in the auction were Estonia Offshore Wind DevCo (Ignitis Group) and Utilitas Wind. Up to 98 wind turbines with a total capacity of up to 1,560 MW are planned to be installed in the Saare 2.1 area.
In 2023, wind represented over 13% of Estonia’s installed capacity with 408 MW. The development of wind is the main priority for the country, with several offshore projects in development. Estonia aims to reach 4.3 TWh of renewable power generation in 2030, including 2.6 TWh from wind in order to achieve its target of reaching climate neutrality by 2050.
