Eskom Green has launched a strategic partner selection process for the 1.5 GW Tubatse Pumped Storage Scheme, a project with up to 21 GWh of storage capacity in Limpopo Province, South Africa (Eskom press release, 13/10/2026). The project is being developed to support the integration of increasing volumes of renewable energy into South Africa's electricity system. According to Eskom Green, the project should be able to generate at full output for up to 14 hours, which should help providing grid balancing, peak-shaving and system flexibility services.
The proposed facility will be developed through a strategic partnership model involving private-sector participation in financing, development and implementation. The company has started a “competitive process to identify a partner with the financial strength, technical expertise, development experience and long-term commitment” to complete the project. Qualified respondents will be eventually invited to participate in a Request for Proposal (RFP) stage.
Eskom Green is pursuing a growth pathway targeting up to 6 GW by 2030, with plans to expand its clean energy portfolio to 21 GW by 2035 and up to 32 GW by 2040, including 5 GW of hydro and pumped storage. The Tubatse project represents a cornerstone on Eskom Green’s ambitions to develop the infrastructure required for a modern, low-carbon electricity system in South Africa.
