Equinor’s 531 MW Mendubim solar plant in Brazil starts operations

The Norwegian energy group Equinor has commissioned its 531 MW Mendubim solar plant in the state of Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil). The project and is expected to generate 1.2 TWh/year of power, of which 60% will be sold to alumina supplier Alunorte under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA), with the remaining production being sold in the Brazilian power market. Mendubim is developed and operated as a joint venture between Scatec, Hydro Rein and Equinor under an equal economic interest of 30%, with Alunorte holding the remaining 10% under its call option.

The project increases Equinor’s equity power production in Brazil by around 30%, projected to exceed 1.4 TWh in 2024, and it also marks Scatec’s second venture in the country.

At the end of 2022, Brazil reached a total installed capacity of 206 GW, of which solar represented 23 GW (11.5%).
