The Norwegian oil and gas company Equinor will supply 720 mcm of natural gas to the Danish energy company Ørsted via the newly opened 10 bcm/year Baltic Pipe gas pipeline to ensure supply to Denmark. The agreement was signed for volumes equivalent to 8 TWh delivered during the period running from 1 January 2023 to 1 April 2024. The total volume of gas supplied corresponds to roughly a quarter of the expected total Danish gas consumption, which stood at approximately 2.7 bcm in 2021.
The completion of the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline in September 2022 has enabled Ørsted to buy gas from the Norwegian gas fields, as the gas pipeline connects the Norwegian gas pipe system to Denmark and Poland. Norway has proven natural gas resources reaching nearly 2,100 bcm and produced 119 bcm in 2021.
