Equinor and its partners have launched a public consultation on the environmental impact assessment programme for a potential development of the Wisting oil field in the Barents Sea, in Norway (Equinor, 25/06/2026).
Wisting is the largest undeveloped oil discovery on the Norwegian continental shelf, with recoverable resources of just under 500 mboe, and the current concept is based on an FPSO with an energy‑efficient gas turbine and possible CCS to reduce CO₂ emissions. The project remains at an early stage and still requires further improvements to be commercially viable.
Final concept selection is targeted by the end of 2026, with a final investment decision (FID) planned for the end of 2027, subject to technical, regulatory, and cost conditions being met, including for any CCS solution. The Wisting licence is held by Equinor Energy (42.5%), Aker BP (27.5%), Petoro (20%), and INPEX Idemitsu Norge (10%).
