Equinor Brazil has applied for a license from the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) to develop two offshore wind projects of 2 GW each. The first project, which is expected to be completed in 2024, would be built on the coast of Rio de Janeiro and the second between the states of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo. The wind plants will be installed about 20 km from the coast, at depths of between 15 and 35 meters, and comprise 320 wind turbines, 160 per wind farm, each with a nominal capacity of 12 MW.
Earlier in August 2020, the IBAMA awarded a license to a 1.2 GW offshore wind project in Camocim (Ceará, northeast Brazil), to be developed by BI Energia. The offshore wind power plant, which requires an investment of BRL14bn (US$2.6bn), is due to enter operation in 2022. As of August 2020, wind accounts for around 9% of Brazil's installed capacity with 15.4 GW. More than 4 GW are under construction and 33.8 GW are under development.
