Equinor, Orsted, ASOW in race for New Jersey offshore wind projects (USA)

Norwegian energy group Equinor, Danish renewable power group Ørsted and Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind (ASOW, a joint venture of Shell and EDF Renewables) are competing to develop 1.1 GW of wind offshore capacity in New Jersey (USA). The bids were sent to the Board of Public Utilities. Equinor has proposed to develop its Boardwalk Wind project off the New Jersey coast, while ASOW intends to develop 2.5 GW in Atlantic City and Ørsted the 2 GW Ocean Wind project, also located in Atlantic City.

New Jersey has set a target for 2030 to have 3.5 GW of offshore wind installed by 2030 and to have 100% of its electricity produced by renewable energy sources by 2050. In September 2018, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) invited bidders for the development of 1,100 MW of offshore wind capacity.

Other US States such as Massachusetts and New York are also moving ahead quickly with new wind power projects. The state of New York launched an 800 MW offshore wind solicitation in November 2018, the first step towards reaching the target of 2,400 MW of new offshore wind generation by 2030 and 50% of renewable power generation by 2030. Meanwhile, Massachusetts is developing the 800 MW Vineyard Wind offshore project.
