The Norwegian state-owned energy group Equinor and its partners Petoro and OMV have discovered between 3.3 and 10.3 Mboe of gas at the Gullfaks South field, 190 kilometres northwest of Bergen (Norway) in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea (Equinor press release, 08/10/2026). The discovery is within the production licence for Gullfaks.
In 2025, Norway produced 127 bcm of natural gas, equivalent to 107 Mboe. Its natural gas proved reserves reached 1,784 bcm. They have declined by more than 50% since 2000, when they reached a peak at 3,841 bcm.
