Equinor launches a project adding 18 bcm of gas to Hammerfest LNG (Norway)

The Norwegian oil and gas company Equinor has put into operation phase 1 of the Askeladd natural gas development in the Barents Sea, which will bring 18 bcm of gas and 2 mcm of condensate to the market via the Hammerfest LNG plant, located on Melkøya Island (northern Norway). The Askeladd development is a satellite field of the Snøhvit gas field (193 bcm of estimated reserves) and developed as a subsea tie-in to the Snøhvit facility and Hammerfest LNG.

The Askeladd project phase 1, which required an investment of NOK4.5bn (€432m), is the first of several projects linked to the development of the Snøhvit field and the infrastructure around Hammerfest LNG. The Askeladd West project is next with two new wells tied back to existing infrastructure. The Hammerfest LNG plant has the ability to deliver 18.4 mcm/day (6.5 bcm/year) of gas. This corresponds to the needs of around 6.5 million households and represents about 5% of Norwegian gas exports.

In 2021, Norway produced more than 119 bcm of natural gas, of which more than 113 bcm were exported, mainly to the European Union.
