Equinor and its partners (Petoro and OMV) have discovered oil and gas in the Granat prospect near the Gullfaks oil field, located at 190 km northwest of Bergen (Norway) (Norwegian government press release, 16/02/2026). The discovery was made in wildcat well 3/12-N-3 HH under the production licence 277, which was awarded in 2002 under Norway’s North Sea Awards 2001. Preliminary estimates of the Granat discovery consider that it may have reserves going from 0.2 and 0.6 mcm of recoverable oil equivalent, or between 1.3-3.8 Mboe. Equinor (operator) and its partners are considering linking the discovery to existing infrastructure in the Gullfaks area.
In January 2026 Equinor received 17 operatorships and is participating in 35 licences in the latest annual licensing round made by the Norwegian Energy Ministry, which awarded a total of 57 offshore oil and gas exploration licences (KEI, 15/01/2026). The company also announced that it plans to drill 20-30 exploration wells annually.
