Equinor and BP, through their Empire Wind 50-50 joint venture, have selected Vestas as the preferred supplier to deliver 130 138 V236-15MW wind turbine generators for the 2.1 GW Empire Wind I and Empire Wind II offshore wind projects off Long Island in the state of New York (United States). In addition, the two companies have delayed the completion date for Empire Wind I by 18 months to the end of 2026 due to the ongoing regulatory permitting process and the complexity of offshore construction.
In January 2021, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) hads selected the Equinor - BP partnership to provide 2,490 MW of power as part of its second offshore wind solicitation. Equinor’s proposal includes two projects, namely 1,260 MW Empire Wind II and 1,230 MW Beacon Wind I. BP completed the acquisition of a 50% stake in Empire Wind in February 2021.
