The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it intends to withdraw the current greenhouse gas-cutting Clean Power Plan (CPP) or move forward with a new version and plans to remove the regulation of CO2 emissions from power plants, which has been criticized by the Republicans and several industry groups as an overreach of federal authority.
In March 2017, the Trump administration mandated the EPA to remove the plan. The EPA will rescind the current CPP and sent an updated proposal to the White House Office of Management and Budget for review.
The CPP is an Obama-era policy meant to fight climate change and curb global warming which was first proposed by the EPA in 2014 and implemented in 2015. The plan aimed to cut CO2 emissions in particular from coal-fired power plants but is now on hold since 27 American States, various companies and business groups filed a lawsuit against it to the Supreme Court, which decided to block it in 2016 in a tight 5-4 vote.
