The Australian company Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with E.ON to deliver up to 5 Mt/year of green hydrogen to Europe by 2030, equal to around one-third of the calorific energy Germany imports from Russia.
In June 2021, Australia and Germany signed the Australia-Germany Hydrogen Accord, to allow Australia to become a major hydrogen exporter and Germany to import significant quantities of hydrogen in the future. The Accord includes three major initiatives : setting up the German-Australian Hydrogen Innovation and Technology Incubator (HyGATE) to support pilot, trial, demonstration and research projects along the hydrogen supply chain (launched in March 2022 with AUD 50m (US$36m) from the Australian federal government and €50m (US$55m) from Germany); facilitating industry-to-industry cooperation on demonstration projects in Australian hydrogen hubs ; and exploring options to facilitate the trade of hydrogen and ammonia from Australia to Germany.
