E.ON has completed the separation of its operations and launched a new company, Uniper, as announced in December 2014.
Uniper groups together conventional power generation (around 40 GW of hydro, natural gas, coal power assets) and global energy trading, will operate independently from E.ON and will be spun off later in 2016 following the approval of E.ON shareholders; the spin-off would take place in the second half of 2016 when E.ON divests a majority stake in Uniper and lists the company’s shares on the stock market. E.ON intends to part with its remaining stake over the medium term.
E.ON will focus on renewables, distribution networks and customer solutions. Nuclear activities, originally expected to be handled by this company, are no longer considered as strategic due to Germany's policy to phase out nuclear energy by 2022 and will be transferred to a separate operating unit, PreussenElektra. PreussenElektra will operate E.ON's remaining three nuclear operation stations in Germany and meet the group's asset-retirement and waste-management obligations.
