Eolus plans five new onshore wind projects in Finland totalling 600 MW

The Swedish renewable energy developer Eolus Vind has signed an agreement with the Finnish landowner and forest and nature capital company Finsilva for development of five new wind power projects in Finland, totalling 600 MW. The projects, which will be located in central Finland, are currently in the early development phase. Commissioning of the power plants is expected to begin from 2027.

At the end of 2022, Eolus had approximately 3.7 GW projects under development in Finland, the majority of which being offshore wind. In January 2023, Eolus Vind was awarded research permits by the Finnish government for the development of two offshore wind projects, totalling a capacity of 3.5 GW and located in the Bothnian Sea (south-western Finland).

At the end of 2021, Finland had about 3.2 GW of installed onshore wind capacity (and only 73 MW for offshore wind). The country currently has 4 GW of wind projects under construction and over 23 GW under development, including an up to 2.1 GW offshore wind project in Åland developed by the Finnish company Ilmatar. Finland has set the goal to reach 50% of renewables in the country’s final energy consumption by 2030 and to reach net zero emissions by 2035.
