Eolus plans to develop two offshore wind parks totalling 3.5 GW off Finland

The Swedish wind developer company Eolus Vind plans to develop two offshore wind parks totalling 3.5 GW off the coast of southeastern Finland. The Wellamo offshore wind park is expected to have a capacity of 2 GW and will be situated 90 km off the coast near Pori. The Tuulia offshore wind park is expected to have a capacity of 1.5 GW and will be located 30 km off the coast of Merikarvia.

Eolus has applied to the government of Finland to investigate the conditions for establishing the offshore projects. The projects are expected to produce between 14 and 16 TWh/year for the Finnish electricity grid.

In July 2022, Finland approved the lease of two state-owned maritime areas for two upcoming offshore wind projects in the Baltic Sea totalling up to 1.8 GW, off coasts of Korsnäs and Pori.

At the end of 2021, Finland only had 73 MW of offshore wind installed capacity (but over 3 GW of onshore wind capacity). The country currently has 4.6 GW of wind projects under construction and over 16 GW under development.
