Eolus files application for its 1 GW Västvind offshore wind project in Sweden

The Swedish renewable energy developer Eolus Vind has filed a permit application for its 1 GW Västvind offshore wind power project, located west of Gothenburg in southern Sweden. The wind project will comprise 50 turbines and will be able to generate 4 TWh/year of electricity. The submitted permit application is to be processed by both the Land and Environment Court in Västra Götaland and the Swedish government, as the project is situated in territorial waters. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027 and completion is expected for 2029.

Sweden has issued a roadmap for a transition to an entirely renewable electricity system (100% renewable electricity production) by 2040. In 2021, the country had 203 MW of installed offshore wind capacity and nearly 12 GW of onshore wind (over 14 GW in 2022 according to preliminary estimates).
