The Swedish renewable energy developer Eolus Vind has filed an application to the Swedish Government and the Land and Environment Court for its up to 1.7 GW Najaderna offshore wind project off Tierp's coast in Uppsala County within Sweden's economic zone. The project would consist of 67 wind turbines each rated between 15 MW and 25 MW, for a total capacity of 1,000 to 1,700 MW. The Najaderna project could generate 4 to 5 TWh/year,. If approved, the project could enter construction in 2028.
Eolus Vind is building up a large portolio of offshore wind projects in Sweden and in Finland. In 2023, Eolus filed a permit application for its 1 GW Västvind offshore wind power project, located west of Gothenburg in southern Sweden and for its 1.4 GW Arkona offshore wind project off Skåne's coast. In addition, SeaSapphire, a joint venture between Eolus and Simply Blue Group, has submitted an environmental impact assessment (EIA) programme for the 2 GW Wellamo offshore wind power project, which will be developed in the Bothnian Sea in Finland.
Sweden aims to reach an entirely "fossil-free" electricity system by 2040 (the initial mention (2016) of a "100% renewable electricity system" was replaced by "fossil-free" to include nuclear in 2023). In 2022, the country had 193 MW of installed offshore wind capacity and over 14 GW of onshore wind. Sweden has more than 3 GW of wind power capacity under construction and nearly 84 GW under development.
