SeaSapphire, a joint venture between Eolus and Simply Blue Group, has submitted an environmental impact assessment (EIA) programme for the 2 GW Wellamo offshore wind power project, which will be developed in the Bothnian Sea between Finland and Sweden. The EIA was submitted to the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment of Southwest Finland for approval.
The Wellamo offshore wind power project, which will be located off Satakunta about 90 km from Finland’s coast, will comprise around 100 turbines and be able to produce 8-9 TWh/year once completed. The wind park will cover an area of about 1,000 km2.
At the end of 2021, Finland had about 3.2 GW of installed onshore wind capacity (and only 73 MW for offshore wind). The country currently has 3 GW of wind projects under construction and over 23 GW under development. Finland has set the goal to reach 50% of renewables in the country’s final energy consumption by 2030 and to reach net zero emissions by 2035.
