Entergy Louisiana, a subsidiary of the US company Entergy, has filed a request with the Louisiana Public Service Commission to add 3 GW of solar power to its generation portfolio in the southern US state. Entergy Louisiana is notably seeking approval for 175 MW from a facility in Iberville Parish and 49 MW from the Sterlington Solar Facility in Ouachita Parish.
These requests come on top of the 225 MW of solar power the company requested earlier in March 2023, bringing Entergy’s total solar power waiting approval for potential construction in Louisiana to 3,225 MW.
These solar additions in Louisiana will contribute to Entergy’s plan to install between 15 and 17 GW of renewable resources by the end of 2031. The company also announced a commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Entergy currently owns and operates about 24 GW of electric generating capacity in the US, including 5 GW of nuclear power.
At the end of 2021, solar represented 8% of the US’ installed capacity with 107 GW and 3.5% of its power generation with 149 TWh. The country currently has more than 22 GW of solar capacity under construction and 51 GW under development. The US’ Energy Information Administration (EIA) forecasts that 29 GW of new solar capacity will be commissioned in the country in 2023.
