Enlight begins commercial operations on a 207 MW wind project in Israel

The Israeli company Enlight Renewable Energy has announced the start of commercial operations for its 207 MW Genesis wind project, the largest wind power project in Israel. As of October 2023, 34 of the project’s 39 turbines have reached commercial operations, comprising a generation capacity of 180 MW. The remaining five turbines are expected to be operational after the completion of final tests, raising capacity to the full 207 MW.

Genesis Wind was built with a total investment of about US$340m and was first connected to Israel’s power grid in June 2023. The project is expected to provide clean electricity equivalent to the annual consumption of 70,000 households, offsetting emissions by 180 ktCO2/year. As part of the project, a new 27 km underground high-voltage transmission cable was built connecting the Golan Heights to Israel’s national grid.

As of end-2022, Israel only had 27 MW of installed wind capacity (out of a total of over 20 GW), which generated only about 218 GWh. Around 500 MW of wind projects are currently planned or under construction in the country.
