Italy’s Eni has announced that the sail-away ceremony for the Nguya floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit was held in Shanghai. The unit will play a key role in ramping up LNG production as part of the Congo LNG project. Congo LNG is designed to tap into the gas resources of the Marine XII block, offshore the Republic of Congo, through the deployment of two FLNG units at the Nenè and Litchendjili fields. One unit, FLNG Tango, is already operational within the concession.
With a liquefaction capacity of 0.6 Mt/year, Tango exported its first cargo in February 2024 and has delivered 12 cargoes to date. The second unit, FLNG Nguya, has a liquefaction capacity of 2.4 Mt/year and is expected to come online by the end of 2025, bringing total project capacity to 3 Mt/year. It also features storage capacity for 180,000 cubic meters of LNG and 45,000 cubic meters of LPG. In addition to processing gas from the Marine XII concession, FLNG Nguya will be able to handle volumes from other fields as well.
A floating production and compression unit, converted from the Scarabeo 5 drilling rig, has also been refurbished and is set to depart in the coming days. It will process gas for delivery to the Nguya unit. Meanwhile, subsea infrastructure work required to launch Phase 2 of the Congo LNG project is progressing on schedule, ensuring mooring and startup of the Nguya unit by the end of 2025.
