Eni partners with YPF to develop a 12 Mt/year LNG export plant in Argentina

Eni and the Argentinian state-owned energy group YPF have signed an agreement for the 12 Mt/year Argentina LNG (ARGLNG) export project. It specifies the required steps to reach the final investment decision (FID) for the phase of the project that includes the production, treatment, transportation and liquefaction installations of gas through floating units.

The ARLNG project seeks to develop the Vaca Muerta onshore gas field and supply international markets to export up to 30 Mt/year of LNG by the end of the decade. The Vaca Muerta formation is estimated to be the second largest unconventional gas reserve and the fourth largest oil reserve of its kind in the world, with estimated gas reserves of around 8,700 bcm and oil reserves at 16.2 Gbl. A memorandum of understanding on the project was signed in April 2025 by the two companies.

Argentina does not currently produce or export LNG. Harbour Energy and its partners made a positive Final Investment Decision (FID) for the 6 Mt/year Southern Energy FLNG export project in May 2025. Production is expected to start in late 2027.
