Eni (Italy) posts record profit in 2022 thanks to higher prices

The Italian oil and gas company Eni has released it 2022 results, in which the group posts a €13.3bn adjusted net profit, a more than threefold increase compared to 2021 (+€9bn). Eni produced 1,610 kboe/d of hydrocarbon in 2022, a 4% decrease compared to 2021. Production includes 751 kb/d of liquids (-8%) and 4,523 mcf/d (46.7 bcm/year) of natural gas (-2%). In 2022, the group also added 750 mboe of new resources to its reserve base thanks to exploration.

Eni’s total refinery throughput reached 27.12 Mt in 2022 (a slight 1% decrease compared to 2021) with 16.12 Mt in Italy alone (-2%). Retail sales of oil products in Europe reached 7.5 Mt in 2022 (+4%), including 5.38 Mt in Italy (+5%), while its wholesale sales in Europe rose by 5% to 8.63 Mt, including 6.19 Mt in Italy (+3%). Eni sold 60.52 bcm of gas in 2022 (14% less than in 2021), including 9.4 bcm of LNG (-14%): the group sold 30.67 bcm in Italy (-17%) and 27.41 bcm in the rest of Europe (-2%). Lower gas sales were offset by a surge in average gas prices (+45%); average liquid prices also grew by 38% in 2022. In 2022, Eni sold 22.37 TWh of electricity through the open market (-22%) and produced 21.37 TWh of power from thermal sources (-4%) and 2.55 TWh from renewable sources (+159%) through its affiliate Plenitude.
