The Italian energy giant Eni has made a significant gas discovery made in its Geliga‑1 exploration well in the Ganal block in the Kutei Basin, offshore Indonesia (Eni press release, 20/04/2026). The Geliga‑1 well encountered a gas column in the targeted Miocene interval, with preliminary estimates considering the presence of approximately 5 Tcf (142 bcm) of gas and 300 mbl of condensate.
Eni has a successful record exploring the Kutei Basin, located at 70 km of the East Kalimantan coast, where it has made two significant discoveries (the Geng North in late 2023 and the Konta-1 in December 2025), confirming the basin’s gas play and the scalability of resources in the area.
Eni has recently reached Final Investment Decisions (FIDs) for the Gendalo and Gandang gas project (South Hub), and for the Geng North and Gehem fields (North Hub). The North Hub is planned to have a newly built FPSO with a capacity of 1 bcf/d (about 10.3 bcm/year) and 90,000 bbl/d of condensate (32 mbl/year), in addition to the existing Bontang LNG plant.
