Engie plans to invest €800m in 2019-2024 to develop French biogas

French energy company Engie has announced plans to develop the biogas sector in France and supports the objective of at least 10% green gas injected into the networks by 2030, as stipulated in the French Energy Transition Law for Green Growth. As a first step, the firm is set to invest €800m over the next five years.

By 2030, a total of €2bn will be invested to reach a biomethane production milestone of 5 TWh/year. Besides, Engie will also support the biogas sector's objective to reduce costs by about 30 to 40% by 2030 and thereby achieve cost parity with natural gas. In order to increase the proportion of domestic biogas projects, the company will focus on standardizing, massifying and digitizing projects.

The group has just inaugurated a €10m biogas production plant, the Beauce Gâtinais Biogas facility, in the Centre-Val de Loire region, which will produce 23 GWh/year of biomethane.
