Engie (France) announces a €1.5bn net loss in 2020

The French energy group Engie has released its 2020 results, posting a €1.5bn net loss, mainly due to a €2.9bn impairment charge to prepare for the closures of its nuclear power plants in Belgium. In November 2020, the group decided not to invest to extend the lifetime of its two Belgian nuclear power plants in Doel (2.9 GW), near Antwerp, and Tihange (3 GW), near Liège, as the Belgian government committed in April 2020 to phase out nuclear between 2022 and 2025.

Engie commissioned 3 GW of new renewable capacity in 2020, including 1.8 GW in the United States, 900 MW in Europe and 300 MW in Latin America and other countries. Of the 3 GW added in 2020, 70% is onshore wind, 21% solar PV and 9% offshore wind. In addition, the group acquired 2 GW of operating assets in Europe, including 1.7 GW of hydropower capacity in Portugal (jointly with Crédit Agricole Assurances and Mirova), and 0.3 GW wind in Italy and France. At the end of 2020, the group's renewable capacity stood at 31.1 GW and another 3 GW are under construction and expected to be commissioned in 2021.
