Engie expands in Poland with 250 MW/1,000 MWh BESS acquisition

Engie Zielona Energia, a subsidiary of the French utility group Engie, has signed an agreement to acquire a 250 MW/1,000 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project from the Polish renewable energy developer R.Power (ENGIE Zielona Energia press release, 26/06/2026). The planned BESS, located in Tursko Wielkie in Poland’s Świętokrzyskie province, has reached the ready-to-build stage. Construction is expected to start in early 2027, with the facility scheduled to be commissioned in the fourth quarter of 2028, according to the company’s press release.

“The storage facility will be connected directly to the Połaniec substation. This node plays a fundamental role in the transmission architecture of south-eastern Poland. The presence of a large-scale battery installation at such an important network point will allow for effective management of power flows and will really relieve the transmission infrastructure in the region”, said the company.

Engie also noted that the Polish power system is currently experiencing regular oversupply of renewable energy generation, leading to the implementation of non-market power curtailment measures.
