ENGIE Chile has started commercial operations at the 203 MW/1 GWh BESS Libélula and 48 MW/275 MWh BESS Los Loros projects in Chile (ENGIE Chile press release, 28/08/2026).
BESS Libélula, located in Colina and Tiltil in the Metropolitan Region comprises 208 lithium-ion battery containers providing five hours of storage. It forms part of the PV & BESS Libélula complex, which also includes a 140 MW solar PV plant that is fully energised and is obtaining commercial operation approval.
BESS Los Loros, located at ENGIE’s Los Loros solar park in Tierra Amarilla, Atacama Region, comprises 63 lithium iron phosphate battery containers. The 48 MW/275 MWh system is planned to store electricity produced by the solar plant during the day for injection into the grid during periods of higher demand.
The USD283m projects add 251 MW of storage capacity to the National Electricity System, bringing ENGIE’s operational BESS portfolio in Chile to 663 MW.
The company’s portfolio also includes the 116 MW/660 MWh BESS Tocopilla and 25 MW/150 MWh BESS Arica, which entered commercial operation in November 2025 and July 2026, respectively.
