Engie Brasil Energia, a subsidiary of the French utility Engie, has started construction works on the 846 MW Serra do Assuruá wind complex project, located in the municipality of Gentio do Ouro, in the state of Bahia (north-eastern Brazil).
The onshore wind project, which is expected to require an investment of BRL6bn (US$1.2bn), is scheduled to be commissioned in the second half of 2024. It will comprise 24 separate wind parks, totalling 188 wind turbines. The project will also include 28 km of power transmission lines.
As of end-2022, wind represented 11.5% of Brazil’s installed capacity with 23.7 GW and 12% of its power generation with 82 TWh. The country currently has around 7 GW of wind capacity under construction and over 60 GW under development.
