Engie has announced the full commissioning of its 650 MW Red Sea Wind Energy wind project in Ras Ghareb, Egypt — ahead of the initial Q3 2025 schedule. A 25-year PPA has been signed with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), securing long-term revenue for the project.
The project was developed by the Red Sea Wind Energy consortium, which includes Engie (35%), Orascom Construction PLC (25%), Toyota Tsusho Corporation (20%), and Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation (20%).
Engie is also developing a new wind plant exceeding 900 MW, located near the Red Sea Wind Energy site, in collaboration with the same consortium. In November 2022, the consortium signed a MoU with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) and the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) to develop a 3 GW wind project in Egypt.
At the end of 2024, wind represented about 3% of Egypt’s installed capacity with 1.9 GW and 3% of its power generation with 6 TWh. Egypt's updated NDC (2023) brings forward to 2030 the country's objective to reach 42% of renewable capacity, initially set for 2035 (including 14% from wind).
