Engie and Meridiam, a French investment company, have signed a Sales and Purchase Agreement with the British private equity firm Actis to acquire BTE Renewables, a developer, owner and operator of renewable assets in Africa, with an operating presence in South Africa and Kenya. The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2023, subject to the fulfilment of certain authorizations including merger control clearance from relevant competition authorities.
Engie's purchase of BTE in South Africa will bring an additional 340 MW of renewable operating assets, comprising 150 MW of onshore wind, 190 MW of solar, and a portfolio of over 3 GW of advanced development projects in South Africa. Meridiam has acquired the operational 100 MW Kipeto wind project located 70 km south of Nairobi in Kenya, along with the ongoing development of the 50 MW Siruai greenfield wind project with storage. Additionally, there are identified opportunities for over 100 MW of additional solar projects.
