Engie has received approval from the Brazilian National Electric Energy (ANEEL) to commission the last 2 wind parks of the 11 constituting its 361 MW Campo Largo II wind project in Umburanas, in the state of Bahia (north-eastern Brazil). The French company operates two other large wind projects, Campo Largo and Umburanas, totalling 687 MW, in the Bahia state. With the full commissioning of Campo Largo II, Engie's wind complex now reaches 1,263 MW of installed wind capacity.
In May 2020, Engie had signed a BRL2.7bn (US$490m) deal with the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) to finance the Campo Largo II wind project in the state of Bahia and the Gralha Azul power transmission project, which includes the construction of 1,000 km of transmission lines, 5 new substations and the expansion of an additional 5 substations in the state of Paraná.
Wind accounts for nearly 10% of Brazil’s installed capacity with 17 GW (2020).
