The Austrian renewable developer Enery has launched a joint venture with the Romanian oil and gas group OMV Petrom to develop a 400 MW solar power project to be located in Byala Slatina, in Bulgaria. Enery and OMV Petrom will each own 50% of the joint venture, and plan to invest approximatively €200m in the project by 2027.
Once operational, the Gabare solar PV project could cover the electricity consumption equivalent of about 150,000 Bulgarian households. It could also feature a battery energy storage system (BESS) of up to 600 MWh. The final investment decision (FID) is expected by the end of 2025, while commercial operations are set for 2027.
The new strategy for 2053 (2023) set different targets for renewables by 2030 and 2050: solar (+7 GW by 2030 and 12 GW by 2050), wind (+2 GW by 2030 and 4 GW by 2050), hydropower (+0.9 GW by 2030 and 1.3 GW by 2050), storage (+1 GW of pumped-storage by 2035, +600 MW of battery storage by 2030 and 1.5 GW of seasonal storage by 2050).
