EnergyCo starts construction of Hunter-Central Coast REZ in Australia

The local Australian government of New South Wales (NSW) has announced the start of construction works on the Hunter-Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) (NSW press release, 27/02/2026). The network infrastructure project is located in Kurri Kurri (NSW, Australia) and it is expected to connect an additional 1.8 GW of new renewable generation and storage projects

It consists of the upgrade of about 85 km of sub-transmission lines, the installation of 18 km of new underground fibre optic communications cable, the construction of two new energy hubs (Sandy Creek and Antiene, in Muswellbrook LGA), and the upgrade of existing substations

The Hunter-Central Coast REZ, being developed by EnergyCo and Ausgrid (network operator), and is the first of its kind to upgrade existing distribution infrastructure.

EnergyCo is the agency responsible for planning, coordinating, and delivering major renewable energy infrastructure, particularly the REZs, in New South Wales.
