Energa goes ahead with 1 GW Ostroleka coal-fired project (Poland)

The Polish state-held energy company Energa has confirmed plans to invest in the 1,000 MW Ostroleka C coal-fired power project in Poland. The company will select a construction contractor in the first quarter of 2018, in order to have the plant operational in mid-2023. The financing model should be ready by the end of September 2017. The PLN6bn (€1.4bn) project is developed by Energa and Polish power utility Enea; a third partner could be invited to co-finance the project.

In May 2016, Energa decided to revive the 1,000 MW Ostroleka-C coal-fired power project, that had been cancelled in September 2012. The project is now considered strategic in the government's energy security plans. Difficulties in finding financing were one of the main reasons in the project suspension. The construction was initially scheduled to start in late 2012 and the commissioning was expected in 2016.

Energa will go ahead with the project, while Poland is considering launching a capacity market, in which power producers could be paid for keeping capacities available. The Parliament is currently working on the capacity scheme law, that could help state-owned power utility finance the construction of new coal-fired power plants.
