Enel will shut down 336 MW of coal-fired capacity in Italy in August 2021

Enel has received approvals to decommission units 1 and 2 of its Fusina coal-fired plant with a total capacity of 336 MW in Venice (Italy) from 17 August 2021. The units can be called into service by the Italian power transmission operator Terna exclusively to deal with emergency situations of the national electricity system until 31 December 2021.

Enel, the historical power utility (23.6% state-owned), is the largest power producer with a capacity of 27.5 GW in Italy (24% of the total) and a production of 47 TWh in 2019 (17% of total generation, down from 80% before the opening of the sector). The group plans to exit from coal by 2025 in Italy and by 2027 overseas. Enel already has the authorisation to shut down the Brindisi 2 plant (660 MW) in early 2021 and has requested approval to close the 520 MW La Spezia coal-fired power plant in 2021.
