Enel (Italy) buys 830 MW US assets and unveils EUR53bn investment plan

Italian energy company Enel announced the acquisition of a US portfolio of wind and solar parks totalling 830 MW and with an expected power generation of about 2.1 TWh/year for approximately USD1bn (Enel press release, 21/02/2026). The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026. Enel is purchasing these assets from Excelsior Energy Capital, a renewable energy-focused fund. The acquisition was made by Enel Green Power, Enel's renewables arm, which manages a global capacity of 68 GW, encompassing wind, solar, geothermal, and hydroelectric power, as well as energy storage facilities.

In addition, the company plans to increase capital expenditure over the next three years, shifting its focus to renewables, mainly in Europe and the United States (Enel press release, 23/02/2026). Total gross investments in the 2026-2028 plan amount to approximately EUR53bn, up by around EUR10bn compared to the previous plan. Specifically, the company expects to invest:

  • Over EUR26bn in its “Integrated Business”, of which around EUR20bn in renewables with an increase of about EUR8bn compared to the previous plan, in order to add around 15 GW of new renewable capacity, both greenfield (9 GW) and brownfield projects (6 GW);
  • Over EUR26bn in grids, of which about 55% in Italy and the remainder distributed between Iberia (20%) and Latin America (25%).
