Enel commissions two 82.5 MW solar PV plants in South Africa

Italian energy group Enel, through its subsidiary Enel Green Power, has commissioned two 82.5 MW solar PV power projects in South Africa, namely the Adams PV plant in the Northern Cape province and the Pulida PV plant in the Free State province.

Both were completed ahead of schedule and are supported by a 20-year power supply agreement with South African power utility Eskom, which Enel was awarded in 2014 following the third round of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) tender promoted by the South African government. The projects are expected to generate 318 GWh/year together, enough to supply 100,000 South African households, while avoiding the emission of 290 ktCO2/year.

Enel currently owns and operates three other PV plants in South Africa, namely the 10 MW Upington plant commissioned in 2014 in the Northern Cape province, the 82.5 MW Paleisheuwel plant in the Western Cape province and the 66 MW Tom Burke plant in the Limpopo province (both commissioned in 2016). The company also operates the 88 MW Nojoli wind park in the Eastern Cape, where it is also building the 111 MW Gibson Bay wind facility.
