Enel Green Power (EGP) has commissioned the 716 MW Lagoa dos Ventos wind project in the municipalities of Lagoa do Barro do Piauí, Queimada Nova and Dom Inocêncio, in Brazil’s northeastern state of Piauí. The BRL3bn (US$590m) project entails 230 wind turbines and is expected to generate over 3.3 TWh/year of electricity. Construction started in February 2019. Out of the project's total capacity, 510 MW were awarded to EGP in Brazil’s A-6 public tender in December 2017 and are supported by 20-year power and purchase agreements (PPAs) with a cluster of distribution companies operating in the country’s regulated market. The production of the remaining 206 MW will be sold on the free market for sale to retail customers.
In December 2020, EGP started building the 396 MW Lagoa dos Ventos III wind project, which will raise the wind complex's capacity to over 1.1 GW, enough to generate 5 TWh/year of electricity.
