Enel and Sorgenia revive two LNG import projects (20 bcm/year) in Italy

Italy's efforts to seek alternatives for Russian gas and to become independent of Russian gas imports within 24-30 months has revived plans for new LNG import projects. The Italian energy groups Sorgenia and Iren have revived plans to build a 12 bcm/year LNG import terminal in the southern Italian port of Gioia Tauro. The project was initially developed by LNG MedGas, a consortium of Fingas (a joint venture of Sorgenia and Iren) (69.8%) and Medgas Italia (30.2%) and proposed in 2005. It had received approvals but had remained suspended so far. If accelerated, the project could be commissioning as soon as in 2026.

In addition, Enel has proposed to revive the Porto Empedocle LNG import project in Sicily, which had also secured approvals but remained suspended. The project, which could have a capacity of 8 bcm/year, could be operational by 2025.
